Radon Testing & Mitigation Nashville
Serving Bowling Green, Knoxville, Chattanooga and the surrounding areas
Whether you live in Nashville, Franklin, or Mt. Juliet, your home or office is at risk of radon penetration. Radon is a radioactive gas found to cause cancer, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Learn more about radon, its dangers, and the process of radon mitigation.
3 Facts about Radon
In addition to being linked to cancer, radon is among the most difficult gases to detect and is highly intrusive. Because it’s a gas, it is odorless, colorless, and tasteless, meaning only a test designed to detect the gas itself will reveal is presence.
- Origins. Radon is created in the process of radioactive decay, which occurs in rock, soil, and water. Because substances are constantly decaying, radon can be found nearly everywhere and does not choose certain environments over others.
- Prevalence. Occurring naturally, radon is a gas that poses a threat to everyone. Studies have shown that radon is linked to lung cancer in nonsmokers and smokers alike, but is particularly prevalent among the population of current smokers.
- Prevention. Like oxygen and nitrogen, radon cannot be removed from the environment. However, you can test for radon regularly and secure radon mitigation services.
The Dangers of Living with Radon
Although radon isn’t explosive like propane gas, it does cause damage to the lungs up to and including lung cancer. Radon is among the top causes of lung cancer in the United States. The World Health Organization reports approximately 1% of radon transmission cases are attributable to water exposure, with less than 0.1% of cases originating from drinking water. Because exposure to radon can lead to the formation and spread of cancer cells, detecting radon early is highly recommended.
Radon Testing: The Process and Results
Two forms of radon testing are available: short-term and long-term. Because radon seeps into your home through cracks, crevices, and crawlspaces, the chances of re-entry are very high. Short-term tests are ideal for people who need an initial
confirmation or exclusion of radon as a risk factor, whereas long-term testing is recommended to monitor ongoing levels of radon in a space.
By measuring picocuries per liter of air, or pCi/L, short-term tests provide a snapshot of your home or business’s current radon level. The EPA recommends re-testing any space with results at or above 4 pCi/L and following up with radon mitigation services if the second test confirms the first.
Radon mitigation methods differ on a case by case basis, but can include active soil depressurization, the use of heat recovery ventilators, or the process of sealing ductwork to prevent air leakage. In most cases, radon levels can be reduced by 99% or more; however, due to the natural origin of radon gas, eliminating it completely may not be possible. The best goal is to bring the level of radon gas to at or below safe levels, which is generally under 2 pCi/L.
