We have officially welcomed fall with open arms. Something about the crisp air and cool evenings that reminds us the holidays are upon us once more, but so is something else that may not be as enjoyable – pests! Fall is the time when spiders, rodents, and other pests make their way indoors. Your Nashville pest control experts at Ameri Care Services want you to know what you can do to prevent these pests from entering your home or business, and what to do if you find any inside.

Spiders

Spiders aren’t known for moving indoors because it’s cold out. Instead, they usually are just looking for food or a mate. During the fall you may see an influx of spiders inside your home, but most likely they are harmless and won’t even lay eggs inside.

The most common spiders found inside of homes and businesses in Nashville are:

  • American House Spider
  • Cellar Spider
  • Domestic House Spider
  • Cupboard Spider

These spiders usually enter from inside the walls of your home. They prefer to feed on mosquitos, cockroaches, and flies, which is almost like having natural pest control in your home, for free! But, we understand that spiders are known to cause people to feel squeamish.

To avoid spiders in your home, clean regularly and remove cobwebs when you find them. This will discourage the spiders from returning and setting up camp in the corner of your closets or underneath your furniture. Also, keep your home clean of food crumbs, which may attract other pests that spiders like. If you bring in other pests that could make a good meal for a spider, spiders will come looking for them inside your home!

Mice

Mice tend to move indoors as the temperatures drop. They are looking for food, water, and shelter, and a home that provides these three necessities will be attractive to these unwanted rodents. Mice typically prefer dark, hidden areas such as attics or basements, but will travel anywhere inside a home to find what they need. Mice also are known to carry diseases, which is one of the main reasons you do not want them inside your home!

To keep mice out this fall, make sure you seal up any cracks around your doors and windows. Also, avoid leaving food out or even pet food as this can attract mice. Clean your home often, and avoid storing boxes or unused containers inside your home. You also can put out mouse traps or deterrents in your attic or basement to keep them from entering into these spaces.

Other Pests

Cockroaches are, unfortunately, a nuance year-round, not just during the fall season. Cockroaches do prefer to live in warmer environments, which is why you may see an influx of them inside your home or business as the temperatures begin to drop. They will mate and quickly multiply causing an infestation. While you may not see but one or two, rest assured that there are many more behind your walls and under the flooring that you cannot see.

To avoid cockroaches in your home or business, clean often and avoid leaving open food containers out. Always store food in a properly sealed container, avoid leaving dirty dishes in the sink, and plug up any holes or cracks that you may have around your plumbing, doors, and windows.
