The official start of summer is in full swing. Late nights outside, enjoying time with family and friends while relaxing or barbecuing can be fun times until the mosquitos start pestering you and your guests. This summer, your Middle Tennessee pest control experts at Ameri Care Services have some tips to help you prepare for mosquito season. Take action now to help prevent mosquitos from breeding around your property, and keeping you from enjoying the outdoors.

Eliminate standing water

Speaking of breeding grounds, mosquitos prefer to lay eggs in standing water such as stagnant bodies of water, fountains, buckets or flowerpots with standing water, or any other receptacle that holds water. Gutters and even excess moisture in your yard can attract mosquitos. It does not take much water for mosquitos to breed and lay eggs. Therefore, eliminate the possibility by getting rid of any standing water around your property after a rainfall.

Trim your grass

Mosquitos also like tall grass. If you aren’t already keeping your grass mowed regularly, consider doing so to keep from attracting mosquitos to your property. While regular grass mowing can be time-consuming, you can always count it as exercise or hire a professional to do the job for you. Either way, it will be worth the effort.

Use mosquito netting

If you plan on entertaining outside, but don’t want to be bothered by mosquitos, consider hanging up mosquito netting around your porch or area where you plan on entertaining. That way, you can enjoy the outdoors without those pesky mosquitos buzzing around. Some easy to assemble dining canopies have zipper closers for doors and can accommodate several people while dining outside. Plus, these canopies can even provide you with some shade.

Extra defense

If you don’t want to hang a mosquito net, burn some citronella candles around the area where you plan on entertaining. Be careful not to leave any candles unattended, and keep out of reach of kids and pets. While candles may deter mosquitos, bug spray containing DEET is a sure way to avoid mosquito bites. While DEET is safe for most individuals to use, never apply it to children under the age of two unless otherwise directed by your doctor. DEET is the most effective way to avoid mosquitos bites, but another idea is to wear light-colored clothing, which makes you less attractive to some species of mosquitoes. Always wear clothing that is tightly knit to avoid mosquitos biting you through your clothes. Or, you can cover your entire body with DEET mosquito repellant before going outside. Remember also to reapply often if you are outside for a prolonged period.
