It’s almost time for vacation! Whether you are a college student or are a parent with kiddos about to be out of school for the summer, you may be planning a nice getaway with friends or family. You may be headed to visit family out of town, the beach, or on a luxurious getaway to a far off place, one thing is for certain, you don’t want to bring home any unexpected guests, a.k.a. bed bugs!

At Ameri Care Services, we possess a wealth of knowledge of these tiny insects, and we have spent many hours working to get rid of bed bugs for our customers. While we appreciate the business, we understand the headache that a bed bug infestation can cause. We would like to share with you some tips on how to avoid bed bugs on vacation because all you really want to bring back home is a tan, and maybe some souvenirs!

Don’t get complacent

Most people associate bed bugs with low-grade or filthy hotels or motels. However, bed bugs are not picky, they can invade even the most expensive, luxurious hotel, and you can’t always judge a book by its cover – so to speak. Meaning, just because a place you are staying at may look nice, doesn’t mean it couldn’t have bed bugs.

So, regardless of where you stay during your vacation, inspect the room by following these guidelines:

  • Check the mattresses and bedding for any signs of bed bugs, looking for tiny, dark-colored stains, eggs, or shells
  • Look underneath the mattress, and check the headboard too
  • Examine any furniture in the room as well like the sofa, tables, office furniture, and the like

Take precaution with your luggage

Instead of unpacking your clothes and placing them into the dresser drawers, keep your clothes stored in your suitcase, and be sure to place it on a luggage rack or on the bathroom tile.

Take extra precaution by following these packing guidelines before you leave on your trip:

  • Pack using a hard covered suitcase, instead of a fabric one
  • Wrap clothing in plastic bags
  • Select a light colored suitcase, which makes identifying bed bugs easier

Upon returning home, immediately wash all of your clothes in hot water, even clothes that you didn’t wear and are otherwise clean. This way, if any hitchhikers did accompany you home, they will die off in the wash. You may even want to empty your suitcase outside or in the garage, leaving your luggage outside your home for a couple of days just to be sure you don’t bring any bed bugs inside.

These tips may seem a bit excessive, but trust us when we say that you do not want bed bugs in your home! However, despite your best efforts, you still could end up with bed bugs.
