We’ve discussed bed bugs on our blog before, but since vacation season has officially commenced, pest technicians in Murfreesboro at Ameri Care Services want to remind travelers of simple ways to avoid bringing bed bugs home from vacation. Bed bugs can wreak havoc in your home, and it doesn’t take much to cause an infestation. You may think that maintaining a clean home means that bed bugs wouldn’t want to come home with you, but it isn’t your house that they want, it’s you! Bed bugs survive on human blood, which they get from biting you. So, here’s how to make sure you don’t bring any of these hitchhikers back in your luggage.

Check hotel reviews before you go

If you haven’t already, be sure to check online reviews of the hotel where you will be staying for your trip. If the hotel has had issues with bed bugs before, the chances are that travelers will have something to say about it and that usually ends up online for everyone to see. Don’t assume that just because you are staying at an expensive hotel or resort, that the place is bedbug-free.

Pack smart

Choose a plastic suitcase if you can since bed bugs don’t really crawl on hard surfaces. You also could place your clothing in plastic bags or ones that seal to prevent bed bugs from getting into your clothes.

Store your luggage off the carpet

Bed bugs don’t really like to crawl on slick surfaces. So, it is a good idea to store your luggage into the bathroom (on the tile) or store it on the luggage rack in the closet. Either of these locations is a great place to park your luggage while you look around the room searching for signs of bed bugs, which brings us to our next point.

Inspect your room thoroughly

Bed bugs like to bite people, especially while they are sleeping, so if they are going to be in the room, they likely will be on the bed. Be sure to lift up the sheets and check the actual mattress, and under it if you are able to lift it up slightly. Check inside of the pillowcases, as well as on the headboard, especially if it has fabric on it, and remember to check any furniture with fabric.

What to do if you see any bed bugs

If you happen to see any bed bugs or remnants of them, contact hotel management immediately, and report it. You probably don’t want to stay at that hotel. If you have done everything right so far, you should be in the clear. However, just to be sure, leave your luggage outside when you first return home. Take all of your clothing (even clean items) and wash in hot water immediately. Leave shoes, your luggage, or any items you cannot wash, outside for a couple of days to be sure that any bed bugs are gone before bringing everything inside.
